Please review these Ch. 2 vocab words for lessons 1 and 2

environment the surroundings in which people live, work, and play
renewable can be replaced or renewed; example: water and trees
nonrenewable cannot be replaced or renewed; example: coal, oil, gas
fuel anything we burn to provide heat, light, and power
minerals natural resources dug out of the ground
population number of people in a city, state, country, world, etc.
economy people, jobs, money--people working at a job and spending money
conservation the careful use of our natural resources
agriculture the business of growing crops and raising animals
fertilizer chemicals that are used to make the soil richer
fertile good soil for growing crops
irrigation the use of ditches or pipes to bring water to fields
aquifer a layer of rock or gravel that traps water underground
livestock farm animals such as hogs, cows, and chickens
growing season the number of days in a year when the weather is warm enough for crops to grow
food processing turns crops and animal products into the foods you find in boxes, bags, bottles, and jars in stores
