| environment | the surroundings in which people live, work, and play |
| renewable | can be replaced or renewed; example: water and trees |
| nonrenewable | cannot be replaced or renewed; example: coal, oil, gas |
| fuel | anything we burn to provide heat, light, and power |
| minerals | natural resources dug out of the ground |
| population | number of people in a city, state, country, world, etc. |
| economy | people, jobs, money--people working at a job and spending money |
| conservation | the careful use of our natural resources |
| agriculture | the business of growing crops and raising animals |
| fertilizer | chemicals that are used to make the soil richer |
| fertile | good soil for growing crops |
| irrigation | the use of ditches or pipes to bring water to fields |
| aquifer | a layer of rock or gravel that traps water underground |
| livestock | farm animals such as hogs, cows, and chickens |
| growing season | the number of days in a year when the weather is warm enough for crops to grow |
| food processing | turns crops and animal products into the foods you find in boxes, bags, bottles, and jars in stores |
