Storypath Struggle for Independence

TermDefinition
Assembly The main governing body of each colony that made laws and raised money through taxes
Boycott The act of refusing to buy or use something as a way of protesting
Colonists People who live in a colony
Colony A place ruled by another country
Committees of Correspondence Groups of people who wrote and sent letters back and forth between the colonies to communicate political news and feelings
Democracy A government in which the people rule themselves by electing others to represent them and make laws for them
Exports Materials sent out from one country for sale and use in another country
Imports Materials brought in from another country for sale or use
Loyalist A colonist who was loyal to the British king and Parliament's laws and wanted to remain a part of Great Britain
Merchant A person who buys and sells items for a profit
Mother country The country from which colonists come, or the country of one's parents or ancestors
Parliament The lawmaking body if Great Britain
Patriot A colonist who was in favor of America breaking away from Great Britain and becoming an independent nation
Protest An event organized to voice an objection or compliant against something
Tories A British political party that supported the loyalists
Vigilante A member of a self-appointed group of people organized to maintain order and punish criminals
Whigs A British political party that favored American independence from Great Britain during the American Revolution
Stamp Act A British law passed in 1765 that required colonists to pay a tax on documents and some common items
Sugar Act A British law that passed in 1764 that puts a tax on molasses imported into the colonies
Tea Act A British law passes in 1773 that cut the price of tea but kept the tea tax and allowed only certain merchants to sell the tea
Quartering Act A British law passes in 1765 that required colonists to provide housing and food for the British soldiers stationed in America
