| equator | imaginary line halfway between the North and South Poles; 0 degrees latitude |
| latitude | imaginary line measuring the distance north or south of the equator |
| longitude | imaginary line measuring distance east or west of the prime meridian |
| parallel | another name for a line of latitude |
| meridian | another name of a line of longitude |
| prime meridian | line of longitude at 0 degrees |
| cartographer | person who makes maps |
| cardinal directions | four points on a compass (N,S,E,W) |
| intermediate directions | directions halfway between the cardinal directions (NE, NW, SE, SW) |
| compass rose | drawing that indicates directions on a map |
| scale | a guide that explains the relationship between real distances on Earth and distances on a map |
| symbol | something that stands for something else |
| map key | a guide telling you what each symbol on a map stands for |
| locator | small inset map in the corner of a large map that shows where the subject is located on Earth |
| political map | a map that shows the boundaries of states and countries |
| road map | a map that indicates cities, highways, and points of interest |
| historical map | a map that shows information about the past of where past events took place |
| physical map | a map that highlights the Earth's natural features |
| relief map | a physical map that uses shading to show the difference between height and areas of land |
| elevation map | a physical map that uses colors to show the elevation, or height, of land above sea level |
