Chapter 2 vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| landform | a physical feature of the earth's surface, such as a mountain |
| elevation | the height of a landform above or below sea level |
| sea level | the height of the surface of the world's oceans |
| erosion | the process by which water, ice, and wind wear away soil and rock |
| Continental Divide | a stretch of high land along the Rocky Mountains that separates water that flows east from water that flows west |
| resource | something that goes into making what people need |
| fossil fuel | a resource that comes from living things that died millions of years ago; includes petroleum and coal |
| mineral | a substance that can be dug up from the earth and sold or traded; examples include stone, coal, and gold |
| conservation | the careful use and protection of natrual resources, such as forests or mineral deposits |
| recycling | reusing things instead of throwing them out |
