| profit | the money gained from the sale of a good or service after all the costs needed to make the sale are subtracted from the amount received |
| resource | a source or supply of a useful material |
| pelt | an animal skin with the fur on it |
| hunter | a person, usually a man, who spent most of his time hunting or trapping animals for food and for pelts |
| guide | a person hired to help voyageurs and fur traders find their way through unfamiliar lands |
| interpreter | a person who translates for people who speak different languages |
| clerk | a man who managed the day-to-day business ata fur trading post |
| voyageur | a workman who performed the physical labor of the fur trade, including beaver pelts and trade goods by canoe |
| westward expansion | during the 1800's, the movement of settlers and immigrants from the eastern United States to the Midwest and West |
| treaty | a written agreement between two or more nations |
| ratify | to approve formally |
| territory | a part of the United States that is not within a state but is organized with its own governing leaders |
| annuity | an annual payment of food and money that the U.S. Government paid to American Inidans in return for their land |
| reservation | land set aside, or reserved, by the US government for use by an American Indian group |
