| Term | Definition |

| Laptop | Can be transported easily, used in many locations, but more expensive than a PC. |
| Network Server | Stores data in a central location, allowing access to users across the network |
| Mainframe | Large systems that store and process data centrally for the entire organisation, must be staffed by operators |
| Resolution | The picture quality of the screen, larger screens have more pixels so better quality picture |
| Modem | Allows connection to the internet via a telephone line. |
| Hardware | Term used to describe the physical parts of a computer. |
| ICT | Refers to all forms of electronic communication, as well as the processing of data by computers |
| PC | Stands for Personal Computer, sits on the desktop usually. |
| PDA | Personal Digital Assistant also known as a tablet. |
| Network PC | Connected to a server and other computers. |
| Peripheral Device | Any piece of equipment that is attached to the computer eg printer or scanner. |
| CPU | Central Processing Unit is the 'brains' of the computer. It is constructed on a single chip called the microprocessor. |
| Clock Speed | The speed at which the CPU can process information. |
| Megahertz (MHz) | Clock speed is measured in MHz. Mega refers to million and hertz refers to frequency per second. |
| Gighertz (GHz) | Giga refers to thousand million(billion) and hertz refers to frequency per second. |
| 2.4GHz | This processor is capable of 2,400,000,000 cycles per second!!!!!!!!!! |
| Accessibility | Refers to how usable a system is by people with disabilities. |
| Input Device | Any device that allows information to be entered into a PC by typing, importing or downloading. |
| Output Device | Any device that allows results of the PCs processing to be seen or heard. |
| Ports | The method by which an external input and output devices are connected to the PC. |
| Serial Port | Transfers data in a single stream eg keyboards and mice. |
| Parallel Port | Transfers data in several streams eg printers |
| USB Port | Universal Serial Bus |
| FireWire Port | Transfers data at high speeds eg audio and video use |
| Network Port | A slot in the PC that the network cable is slotted into. |
| OCR | Optical Character Recognition |
| OCR Software | Allows scanned information to be converted into text files and edited. |
