Plantation colonies

How they affected the new world.

Why build colonies? Gold, God, Glory, and Geography
Was there widespread colonization in the Americas? YES!
What was the colonization motivated by? Money
What were the three types of colonies? Plantation colonies, Trading Post empires, and Colonial Settlements
Where were the plantation colonies established? Where gold and silver were discovered
Who were the plantation colonies owned by? Spain and Portugal, France, and England.
During the beginning of the Plantation Colonies, who worked the land? Native American Slaves
Later, Native American Slaves were replaced by? African Slaves
Were the Slaves treated fairly? No. They had harsh working conditions and were punished severely
Where did Spain and Portugal establish plantation colonies? Caribbean and Amazon basin
What was grown and sold as a cash crop? Sugar Cane
Where did France establish their plantation colonies? In the Caribbean
Did the French enslave Native Americans? No. They imported African slaves
Who relied on indentured servants? The British and French
What was the purpose of the trading post empires To Trade
Who primarily traded fish and fur? Dutch and French
Who led the way with early colonization and trading posts in South America? The Dutch
Who had the most trading posts in North america? The French
Did they have a good relationship with the natives? Yes. They learned their language and lived among them. They respected their way of life
Why did the French and Indian War begin The The British wanted to take over the fur trade from the French
Who did the native americans fight with? The French
Who won the war? The British
What was the results of the French and Indian war? British took much of France's land and France's power and influence declined in the Americas
What was the purpose of the colonial Settlements? To gain a foothold in the New world
What was the first English settlement in the Americas? Jamestown
Jamestown was established as a trading settlement first, but then became a ? permanent colonial settlement
Who were the Pilgrims? Christian "separatists" from England who went to America for religious freedom.
What was the Pilgrims intention? to make a settlement into a colony of "permanent habitation"
How did Spain and Portugal rule? with a strong, central monarchy. They also kept a close watch on the colonies by appointing viceroys
How did the French and Dutch rule? Not as strict, ruled more loosely, allowed for more political decision-making amongst the colonists
How did the English rule? Allowed a representative government, colonists could participate in decision-making by electing representatives
