| Term | Definition |

| Maps | A representation of some part of the earths surface. |
| Physical maps | Show natural features like mountains, rivers, lakes, oceans and other natural landscape. |
| Historical maps | Show movement of people changing borders, battles, and other historical events. |
| Symbols | Little pictures used to represent anything you want. |
| Legend(Key) | Tells you what the symbols, lines and colors on a map mean. |
| Labels | Words that can explain something about the map. |
| Compass rose | Tells you which way north, south, east and west are. |
| Scale | Shows the ratio between the distance on the map and the distance in real life. |
| Latitude and longitude | Lines that can tell you the exact location on the planet. |
| Roadmap | A map that shows where roads are in states and countries. |
| Globe | A scaled down version of the Earth. It is the shape of a sphere/circle. |
| G.P.S | Global Positioning System. Tells you where you are in the world. |
| Seconds(") | 60 second lines per minute. |
| Minutes(') | 60 minute lines per degree between latitude and longitude. |
| South pole | 90 degrees south of the equator. |
| North pole | 90 degrees north of the equator. |
| Equator | 0 degree line divides the northern and southern hemispheres. |
| Latitude | Lines that run east/west. |
| Prime miridian | 0 degree line divides the eastern and western hemispheres. |
| Degree() | 360 imaginary lines that form a grid on the earth. |
