Judicial Branch

TermDefinition
Supreme Court Reviews decisions made in civil and criminal cases by a trial court or by the Court of Appeals.
Court of Appeals The court of first review for many civil and criminal cases heard by the trial courts.
Superior Court Hear both civil and criminal cases.
State Court Exercise limited jurisdiction within one county.
Probate Court Deals with wills and the estates of deceased(dead) persons.
Grand Jury A group of citizens chosen from among eligible voters in a county or judicial circuit.`
Magistrate Court Limited jurisdiction county courts that issue warrants, hear minor criminal offenses, and hear civil cases involving amounts of $15,000 or less.
Muncipal Court Handle traffic offenses, and violations of local regulations, to issue warrants, and in some instances, to hear misdemeanor cases such as shoplifting and possesion of marijuana.
