| Term | Definition |

| maps | a representation of some part of the earth's surface |
| Physical Maps | A map that shows natural features like rivers, lakes, mountains, oceans and other features |
| Political Maps | A map that shows borders of areas like countries, states, and cities. They can shift as wars are fought and government changes |
| Historical Maps | They show movements of people changing borders, battles, and other historical events |
| Symbols | They are little pictures used to represent anything that you want |
| Legend (Key) | it tells you what the symbols, lines, and colors on a map mean |
| Labels | They are words that can explain something on a map |
| Compass Rose | It tells you which ways north, south east, and west are |
| Scale | It shows the ratio between the distance on a map and the distance in real life |
| Latitude and Longitude | The lines on a map that show excactly where you are on the map |
| Road Maps | A map that shows roads in their location in a state, country, ect. These roads that are labeled with numbers are highways. Roads maps will also show names of streets. |
| Longitude | They run north-south. There are 360 of these imaginary lines. |
| Degree () | The lines of longitude are called degrees. |
| Prime Meridian | The 0-degree line that runs through Greenwich, England. |
| Latitude | The lines run east-west. There are 180 of these. |
| Equator | 0 degrees runs along the Equator. There are 90 degree lines to the north and south of the Equator. The Equator runs east to west. |
| North Pole | 90 degrees of the equator is the North Pole. |
| South Pole | 90 degrees south of the equator is the South Pole |
| Minutes (') | There are 60 minute lines between each degree of latitude and longitude. You would use them to get an exact location. |
| Seconds ('') | There are 60 second lines for each minute line. You use them to get very exact locations. |
| The GPS Tracking Device | It stands for Global Positioning System. It is also a device that tracks where you are on the planet using latitude and longitude lines. |
| Globe | a 3D sphere-like object that shows the planet. You see the earth all around the globe. |
