Vocabulary Terms

QuestionAnswer
Absolutism strong belief that one should not have any limits (restrictions) on his/her power to rule
Monarch king or queen
Unlimited (absolute) no restrictions on power to rule
Divine Right idea that the authority to rule people comes from God
Authoritarian (tyrant) one who strongly demands things be done only his way
Limited (constitutional) government an agent with restrictions placed on its control and use power
Scientific Revolution A time of dramatic change in knowledge and how people solved the great questions of the day
Geocentric theory that the earth was at the center of the universe and unmoving
Heliocentric theory that the sun was at the center of the universe and all the planets revolved around it
Philosopher one who thinks deeply about and looks for solutions to the issues of the day
Separation of powers division of control among two or more branches of government
Executive law enforcement branch of government
Legislative law making branch of government (parliament)
Judical law interpreting branch of government
Checks and balances limits placed on agents of control to prevent abuse of power
Popular sovereignty idea that power is held by the people of a country/nation
Social contract an agreement and its people about the rules and roles of both in a nation
English Civil War a series of violent conflicts between the monarchy and Parliament that temporarily ended absolute rule in England
Glorious Revolution a series of non-violent events between the monarchy and Parliament that permanently established constitutional rule in England
Consititution a social contract that sets up the shape, rules for a government and its people
