Map skills test

TermDefinition
Maps A map is a representation of some part of the earth's surface.
Physical maps Physical maps show natural features like mountains, rivers, lakes, oceans, and other parts of the natural landscape
Political maps Political maps show borders of areas like countries, states, and cities. these can change.
Historical maps historical maps show movements of people changing borders, battles., and other historical events.
symbols Symbols are little pictures used to represent anything you want.
Legend (key) A legend tells you what the symbols, lines, and colors on a map mean.
Labels Labels are words that can explain something about the graph.
Compass Rose A compass rose tells you which way north, south , east, and west are.
Scale Shows the ratio between the distance on the map and the distance in real life.
Latitude and Longitude These lines can tell you your exact location on the map.
Road maps Road maps are designed for motorists showing the roads of a city, or other area.
Longitude Longitude lines run north-south.
Degree There are 360 imaginary lines, each of which is called a degree.
Prime Meridian The prime meridian is the 0 degree line and runs through Greenwich, England.
Latitude Latitude lines run east to west.
Equator 0 degrees latitude runs along the equator. There are 90 degree lines to the North and south of the equator.
North Pole 90 degrees North is the North Pole.
South Pole 90 degrees south is the South Pole.
Minutes (') There are 60 minute lines between each degree of latitude and longitude.
Seconds (") There are 60 second lines for each minute line.
GPS Tracking Device You can use a GPS tracking device to figure out your coordinates. GPS stands for Global Positioning system .
The 0 degree line The 0 degree line is the Prime Meridian.
