TermDefinition
Map a representation of some part of the earth's surface
Physical map shows natural features like mountains and rivers
Political map shows borders between cities, states, and countries. These can shift as wars are fought and the government makes changes
Historical map shows movements of people, changing borders, battles, etc.
Symbols little pictures used to represent something on a map
Legend[key] tells you what the symbols, lines, and colors on a map mean
Labels words that can explain something about the map
Compass Rose tells you what north, south, east and west are
Scale shows the ratio between the distance on a map and the distance in real life
latitude and longitude can tell you your exact location on the planet
longitude run north south on the globe
degree what each longitude line is called
Prime Meridian the 0 degree longitude line that runs through Greenwitch, England
latitude run east west on the globe
Equator 0 degrees latitude
North Pole 90 degrees north of the equator
South Pole 90 degrees south of the equator
Minutes lines used for more precise locations between latitude and longitude lines. sixty of them between each degree of latitude and longitude
Seconds used for more precise locations between latitude and longitude lines. sixty of them between each minute line
GPS Tracking Device tracks your position on the earth in latitude, longitude, second, and minute lines.
GPS stands for global positioning system
