map skills

TermDefinition
Maps A representation of part of the earths surface.
physical maps a map that shows natural features.
political map a map that shows borders of areas.
historical map a map that shows movements of people, changing borders and other historical events.
symbols pictures used to represent anything you want.
legend/key tells you what the symbols colors and lines on the map mean.
compass rose tells you which way north, south, east and west are.
scale shows the ratio between the distance on the map and the distance in real life.
latitude and longitude tells you your exact location on the planet.
longitude imaginary lines around the world that run north south, each is a degree.
degree 360 imaginary lines around the world.
prime meridian 0 degrees longitude.
lattitude imaginary lines that run east west.
equator 0 degrees latitude.
north pole 90 degrees north of the equator.
south pole 90 degrees south of the equator.
minutes 60 of theses make up a degree
seconds 60 of these make up a minute
