Hickson's geographic vocabulary terms

TermDefinition
The Great Lakes A chain of freshwater lakes (Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario) located in eastern North America, on the Canada-US border. Largest group of fresh water lakes on Earth.
St. Lawrence River connects the lakes to the Atlantic Ocean and provides navigation to deep-draft ocean vessels.
Gulf of Mexico The ninth largest body of water in the world. It is an ocean basin largely surrounded by the North American Continent and the island of Cuba.
Death Valley the lowest, driest and hottest valley in the United States.
The Great Basin the largest U.S. desert which is bordered by the Sierra Nevada Range on the west and the Rocky Mountains on the east, the Columbia Plateau to the north and the Mojave and Sonoran deserts to the south.
Continental Divide an imaginary line running north and south along the highest points of the Rocky Mountains.
Great Plains the broad expanse of prairie and steppe which lie east of the Rocky Mountains in the United States and Canada.
Atlantic Coastal Plain the flat stretch of land that borders the Atlantic Ocean (including the Golf of Mexico).
