Civics and economics

QuestionAnswer
demography The study of the size, growth, and distribution of human populations
Sunbelt A region of the US whose climate is dominated by warm weather. GA, FL, TX, and AZ
service job A job in which a person makes a living by providing a service for other people.
baby boom The dramatic rise in the number of births in the US between 1946-1964.
diversity Differences
immigrants People who move from one country to make their homes in another.
discrimination The unfair treatment of a group of people compared with another group.
racism The belief that members of one's gown race are superior to those of other races.
exclusion laws Laws passed to prohibit further immigration from a particular country or region; especially laws passed in 1882-1907 targeting Chinese & Japanese immigrants.
census An official count of the population made every 10 years to find out how many representatives each state should have and to forecast the demand on the different services governments provide.
beliefs Certain ideas that people trust are true.
values Standards of behavior; guidelines for how people should treat each other.
equality The condition of everyone's having the same rights and opportunities.
freedom The ability to make the choices you want and to act upon them.
justice Fairness; the idea that every person deserves to be treated fairly.
