The Meaning of History

history The record and study of past events
culture The values, attitudes, and customs of a group
historian One who is an expert in history, or studying the past
primary source A first-hand account of an historical event
secondary source A second-hand account of an historical event
geographic based on or derived from the physical features of an area
political relating to the government or the public affairs of a country
economic of, relating to, or based on the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services
religious devoted to God or to the powers or forces believed to govern life
social sturcture the distinctive, stable arrangement of institutions whereby human beings in a society interact and live together.
social class a division of a society based on social and economic status
institution an organization or establishment founded for a specific purpose, such as a hospital, church, company, or college. the building where such an organization is situated
historiography the writing of history or the study of the writing of history
era a designated period of time
epoch a period of time in history or a person's life, typically one marked by notable events or particular characteristics
artifact remains of a civilization studied by archeologists
historical causation the process of identifying, analyzing, and evaluating the relationships between historical causes and effects
social pyramid a visual representation of a social hierarchy, where people are ranked based on their power, influence, or dominance
class struggle a conflict between different social classes in society
chronicle a historical account of events arranged in chronological order, as in a timeline
