| civic virtue | putting the common good above individual interest. |
| common good | good of the community as a whole |
| constitution | a set of rules and laws that tell how a government is organized and run |
| subject | a person under the authority or rule of another |
| slave | a person whose human rights are denied and who is forced to work for another |
| self sufficient | able to provide most of one's own need |
| plantation | a large farm usually found in the Southern states |
| indentured servant | a person who agreed to work for someone for a set period of time in return for the cost of coming to America |
| Founders | the people who were important in the establishment of the United States |
| Diverse | people of many different backgrounds |
| colony | a settlement or territory ruled by another country |
| republican government | a government in whcih power is held by the people who elect representatives to run the government for the common good. |
