Social Studies: Harcourt States and Regions - The Southwest

Vocabulary WordDefinition
mesa A hill or a small plateau with a flat top and steep sides.
butte A steep, narrow hill or rock with a flat top, like a mesa, but smaller.
rain shadow The drier side of a mountain.
cloudburst A sudden, heavy rain.
arroyo A deep, water-carved gully or ditch.
aquifer A layer of rock, sand, or gravel that absorbs water.
reservoir A lake made by people to collect and store water.
aqueduct A large pipe or canal that carries water from one place to another.
irrigation The use of canals, ditches, or pipes to carry water to dry places.
pueblo An adobe village.
adobe A mixture of sandy clay and straw that is dried into bricks.
nomad A person who has no permanent home and moves from place to place.
mission A religious settlement.
land grant A gift of land given by the government.
arid Dry, or having little rainfall.
migrant worker A person who moves from place to place, doing different jobs.
commercial Relating to business or trade.
conflict A disagreement between two or more people or groups.
compromise An agreement in which each side in a conflict gives up some of what it wants.
cooperate To work together.
