nominating conventions A meeting at which a political party selects its presidential and vice presidential candidates; first held in the 1820's.
Jacksonian democracy An exspansion of voting rights during the popular Andrew Jackson administration.
democratic party A political party formed by supporters of Andrew Jackson after the presidential election of 1824.
John C. Calhoun American politition and supporter of slavery and state's rights, he served as vic president to Andrew Jackson and was instrumental in the South Carolina nullification crisis.
spoils system A polititions practice of giving government jobs to his or her supporters.
Martin Van Buren American politician and secritary of state under Andrew Jackson, he later became the 8th President of the United States.
Kitchen Cabinet President Andrew Jackson's group of informal advisors; so called because they often met in the White House kitchen.
