direct democracy All citizens meet to debate matters and vote firsthand
representative democracy The citizens choose a smaller group of people to govern them
legislature A group of people that makes laws
colony A group of people in one place who are ruled by a parent country elsewhere
boycott The refusal to purchase certain goods
repeal To cancel a law
independence Self-reliance and freedom from outside control
constitution A detailed written plan for government
confederation A group of individuals or state governments
amend To change
precedent A ruling that is used as the basis for a judicial decision in a later, similar case
government The ruling authority for a community
