Spanish Empire For approximately 300 years "Arizona" was not Arizona; it was part of the Spanish Empire. Arizona became a state in 1912.
1821 (40 years before the Civil War) -Mexico revolted from Spain and won independence. -Arizona was part of the Mexican State of Occidente. -Mexico has 31 states today
1846-1848 Mexican-American War was fought between Mexico and the US -The war began with Mexico attacking American troops along the southern border of Texas on April 25, 1846.
1846-1848 (2) -CAUSE: Mexico fighting to keep what they thought was their property and the US desired to retain the disputed land of Texas and obtain Mexico's norther lands. THE TWO COUNTRIES FOUGHT FOR LAND
1848-Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo the Treaty of Geudalupe Hidalgo was signed to end the Mexican-American War at the City of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
Effects of the Mexican-American War -Mexico ceded 520,000 sq mi. of its territory to the US in exchange for $15 million US dollars. -The cession included several states, presently known as the states of Colorado,AZ,CA,Utah,Nevada,Wyoming and New Mexico (7 states) The US got A LOT of land.
Compromise of 1850 -California gain statehood -Settled the Texas-New Mexico boundaries -Created the territories of Utah and New Mexico -The land which is now known as AZ becomes part of the New Mexico territory -AZ war a part of the New Mexico territory for 13 years.
Compromise of 1850 (2) The Compromise of 1850 was a step of Arizona to become a state.
Territory an organization decision of a country that is not year admitted to the full rights of a state -Mining is huge in AZ. People are mining copper. -Trains are starting to get built.
Gadsden Purchase (1854) Purchased for $10 million ($0.33 per acre) -Purchased the land south of the Gila River -James Gadsden negotiated the purchase -24% of Arizona's current land today
Gadsden Purchase: Comparing Prices Back then: $0.33 per acre Now: Good land- $1 million per acre Not good land- $4,000 per acre
Arizona's Organic Act (1863) Civil War-1861 (2 years into the Civil War) -Signed by President Lincoln on February 24, 1863 -Created AZ territory -Abolished slavery in the territory
Obstacles to Statehood -Governor was appointed by president -Early governors were not AZ residents Issues with the territory: -no capital city -NO GOVERNMENT -no office buildings -no mail service

Territorial Capital The first capital was in Prescott in 1863. Then it was moved to Tuscan in 1867. Established the capital as Phoenix in 1889.
1910 Enabling Act -Passed by Congress to allow AZ to become a state *AZ MUST create a state constitution
Constitution A body of fundamental principles or established precedents according to which a state or other organization is acknowledged to be governed.
Recall The ability given to voters to RECALL or remove elected judges from office.
Initiative A citizen(s)create a bill and request people to sign a petition. With enough petition signatures the bill can be placed on a ballot.
Referendum A bill or law the legislature puts on the ballot for a vote.
Arizona Constitution (1912) -The AZ Constitution is 4 times the size of the US Constitution -Pres. Taft declined statehood because of judicial recall provision -Recall was then removed from the AZ Constitution, second vote, and passed again. -Was signed on February 14, 1912.
