Chapter 1 Explorers

Bartolomeu Dias From Portugal. 1488, rounded and named the Cape of Good Hope.
Vasco da Gama From Portugal. 1498, sailed to India and returned to Portugal with a cargo of spices worth 60 times the cost of his expedition.
Christopher Columbus From Spain. 1492, sailed to San Salvador and discovered America.
Amerigo Vespucci From Italy. Made at least 2 voyages to the Caribbean and South America. America is named after him.
John Cabot From England. 1497, discovered Newfoundland. Provided a basis for England's claim to North America.
Ferdinand Magellan From Spain. 1519, determined to reach the Spice Islands by sailing around the Americas. 18 of the original crew of 300, sailed around the world.
Ponce de Leon From Spain. 1513, claimed and named Florida for Spain.
Hernando de Soto From Spain. 1539, discovered the Mississippi River.
