Horizons Intro

Vocabulary for the introduction of Horizons World History

grid system the north-south and east-west lines on a map that cross each other to form a rectangular pattern
locator a small map or a picture of a globe that shows where the area represented on a larger map is located in a state, in a country, on a continent, or in the world
compass rose a direction marker on a map
intermediate direction a dirction that is midway between two cardinal directions--northeast, southeast, and southwest
map key the part of the a map that explains what the symbols on the map stand for; sometimes called a map legend
chronology a record of events in the order in which they happened
map title the words on a map that describe the subject of the map
inset map a small map inside a larger map
cardinal direction the main directions-north, south, east, and west
map scale the part of a map that compares distance on the map with distance in the real world
history the study of people and events of the past
evidence proof
oral history accounts told by people who did not have written language or who did not write down what happened
historical empathy the understanding of the actions and feelings of people from other times and other places
primary source a record made by people who saw or took part in an event
geography the study of Earth's physical and human features
absolute location exact location of Earth
human feature a building, bridge, farm, road, or people themselves
perspective a certain point of view
analyze to break something down into its parts to see how those parts connect
secondary source a record of an event made by someone who was not there at the time
relative location where a place is in relation to other places
physical feature a feature such as a landform, a body of water, or a resource that has been formed by nature
region an area on Earth whose features make it different from other areas
modify to make a change in
cause an even or an action that makes something else happen
culture a unique way of lif that sets a group of people apart from others
heritage a set of ideas that have been passed down from one generation to another
civics the study of citizenship
economy the way people use resources ot meet their needs
adapt to change in order to make more useful
effect the result of an event or action
society an organized group of people living and working under a set of rules and traditions
government an organized system that groups use to make laws and decisions
civic participation concern with and involvement in one's community, state, nation, or world
economics the study of the way that goods and wealth are produced, distributed, and used
