Vocabulary WordDefinition
prairie An area of flat or rolling land covered mostly with wildflowers and grasses.
tornado A funnel-shaped, spinning windstorm, sometimes called a cyclone or twister.
drought A long time with little or no rain.
ore Rock that contains enough of one or more kinds of minerals to be mined.
adapt To change in order to make more useful, such as fitting one’s way of life into a new environment.
survey To measure, especially land.
township A square of land in the Northwest Territory measuring 6 miles on each side; each township was divided into 36 smaller squares of land to be sold to settlers.
ordinance A law or set of laws.
frontier Land beyond the settled part of a country.
pioneer A person who first settles a new place.
self-sufficient Able to do everything for oneself, with no help from other people.
sod A layer of soil held together by the roots of grasses.
flatboat A large boat with a flat bottom and square ends.
migration The movement of people from one place to another.
steamboat A boat powered by a steam engine that turns a large paddle wheel.
entrepreneur A person who sets up a new business.
stockyard A place with pens and sheds where cattle are kept before being shipped.
assembly line A line of workers and machines along which a product moves as it is put together one step at a time.
mass production A way of manufacturing in which many items that are identical can be made quickly and cheaply.
industrial economy An economy in which factories and machines manufacture most goods.
