| entente | an understanding between nations |
| balance of power | a situation in which each side has equal power |
| Central Powers | one of the two alliances that appeared as war spread |
| Allied Powers | the second alliance that appeared as war spread |
| neutrality | a policy of not taking sides |
| front | a line along which opposing armies face each other |
| trench warfare | soldiers fought from two lines of trenches, or ditches. |
