What is a tariff? a tax on products from other countries to make people choose locally-made goods over foreign-made goods
Why did the North support tarrifs? tariffs made the North's manufactored goods cheaper than foreign goods, therefore people were more likely to buy the cheaper goods from the North
Why did the South oppose tarrifs? it cost more money to buy manufactored goods and the South was afraid that Great Britain would stop buying cotton from them

What region of the US favored states' rights? The South
Why did many people in the North want to abolish slavery? many Northerners thought slavery was morally wrong, cruel and inhumane, and a violation of the principles of democracy
Why did many people in the South want to keep slaves? many Southerner's believed the South's economy depended on the labor of slaves
