Why were early factories built mostly in the Northeast? There were many flowing streams in the Northeast and machines in early factories were driven by water power.
How did an improved transportation system affect westward expansion? It was easier for goods and people to move westward. Also, it enabled people to travel back and forth more efficiently if they needed to.
What was the significance of the Missouri Compromise? It kept the balance of power between slave and free states; also known as the Compromise of 1820.
Explain the terms of the Monroe Doctrine Europe cannot colonize in the Americas further. Any attempt at colonization will be seen as a threat against the U.S. The U.S. will stay out of European affairs.

What was Jackson’s main campaign tactic in 1828? He appealed to the “common man” by insisting that Adams was a person of privilege who did not understand ordinary people. Also, he made a point of going after all of the new voters that were available after voting reform was passed.
Describe Jacksonian Democracy. Majority Rule; common people can be trusted with their own government.
Define: spoils system Jackson (and many other presidents) fired many government employees and replaced them with his political friends and people who had donated to his campaign.
nullification Nullification is when a law is ignored. States, especially South Carolina tried to use this to avoid high tariffs (Tariff of Abomonations).
Manifest Destiny The belief that God wanted white settlers to move westward, and that the U.S. was “destined” to spread from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
What were the reasons that the Cherokees were forced to move west? Gold was discovered in parts of their land, plantations were spreading westward, and generally, white settlers wanted the land.
What were Jackson’s views on secession and nullification? He believed both were treasonous and states he no right to do either.
What was the significance of the Webster-Hayne Debate? It was a debate on the Senate floor between Webster from the North and Hayne from the South about states’ rights and nullification.
How was John C. Calhoun important during the Age of Jackson? He was Jackson’s vice-president during his first term. He came up with the idea of nullification.
What was Jackson’s view of the 2nd National Bank? He believed that the bank only was helpful to wealthy people, that it was corrupt, and that he needed to get rid of it.
What were the causes of the Panic of 1837? The banks were printing too much paper money which caused inflation. Also, speculators borrowed huge sums of money from the banks that could not be paid back.
Why were farmers not impacted as severely during the Panic of 1837? Farmers could grow their own food. They often bartered for the goods they needed, so they whole money meltdown didn’t hit them as hard.
