cold war terms

communism the goverment looks good on paper, but when put in practice it does not work.
Marshall Plan control-this plan named after secretary of state. Its goal was that the United States would provide money, supplies, and equipment to European countries and Japan after WW11.
Iron curtain power-Europe was split into two zones. The east was controlled by the soviet union, and the west by the allies
Truman Doctrine power-The U.S would try to limit countries from becoming communist, through the use of supplies, money, influence, and if possible the military
Policy of Containment power-Basically the soviet union and the U.S began to compete with each other over the philosophies of capitalism..
Berlin Airlift control-The soviet leader Josef Stalin wanted east Germany to remain communist. So he set up a blockade around the capital Berlin.
United nations opportunity-An organization set after the WW11 to prevent future wars. This was also set up to establish peace and prosperity.
NATO -power-North Atlantic Treaty Organization and was made up of the U.S and 16 other countries which pledged to fight and support one another.
Korean conflict control-After WW11 the country of Korea was split into 2. The north was communist and influenced by the soviet union and the south was democratic influenced by NATO.
Capitalism: This is an example of opportunity because in this system all people have the opportunity to succeed in their business, you are not guaranteed to succeed, but you have the potential to.
McCarthyism power-Senator Joseph McCarty started a movement where he accused thousands of Americans as being secret Soviet spies
Superpowers- control-countries whos militaries, economic, and political strength are so great that they can influence events worldwide after WW11.
Sputnik -control-This was the first satellite which was launched into space by the Soviet Union. This was a major concern by the U.S because if the Soviet union could launch satellites into space they can launch missles.
NASA -opportunity-IN response to sputnik the U.S started the NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION to launch U.S satellites
John F. Kennedy struggle-He was president from 1961-1963. He was assassinated in Dallas,TX in 1963. He established the Peace Corps which had young Americans volunteer in poor countries.
Fidel Castro power-He became the communist dictator of Cuba and was supported by the Soviet Union. He became an enemy of the U.S
Bay of pigs Invasion control-the U.S supported Cuban refugees who landed on Cuba and tried to overthrow Castro.
Cuban Missle Crisis power- the U.S discovered that the Soviet Union was building nuclear missle bases in Cuba. This was an immediate threat to the U.S
