Chapter 6 Vocabulary

Vocabulary WordDefinition
1) Cash crop- Crop grown for sale.
2) Farmers' Alliance- Network of farmers' organization that worked for political and economic reforms in the late 1800s.
3) Civil Rights Act of 1875- Law that banned discrimination in public facilities and transportation.
4) Reservation- Public lands where Native Americans were forced to lived by the federal government.
5) Sand Creek Massacre- 1864 incident in which Colorado militia killed a camp of Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians.
6) Battle of the Little Big Horn- 1876 battle in which the Sioux defeated U.S. Army troops.
7) Wounded Knee- 1890 confrontation between cavalry and Sioux that marked the end if the Indian resistance.
8) Assimilate- To be absorbed into the main culture of a society.
9) Dawes General Allotment Act- 1887 law that divided reservation land into private family plots.
10) Vigilante- Self-appointed law enforcer.
11) Transcontinental railroad- Rail link between the eastern and western United States.
12) Land grant- Land designated by the federal government for building schools, roads, or railroads.
13) Open range system- Vast area of grassland on which livestock roamed and grazed.
14) Homestead Act- 1862 law that gave 160 acres of land to citizens willing to live on and cultivate it for five years.
15) Exodusters- African Americans who migrated from the South to the West after the Civil War.
