Farmers' Alliance A network of farmers' organizations that worked for politcal and economic reforms in the late 1800s.
Civil Rights Act of 1875 A law that banned discrimination in public facilties and transportation.
resveration Public lands where native americans were forceed to live by the federal government.
Sand Creek Massacre A 1864 incident in which Colorado militia killed a camp of Cheyenne and Arapaho indians.
Battle of Little Big Horn A 1876 battle in in which the Sioux defeated U.S. army troops.
Wounded Knee A 1890 confrontation between the U.S. cavalry and Sioux that marked the end of the indian resistance.
assimilate To be absorbed into the main culture of a society.
Dawes General Allotment Act A 1887 law that divided reservation land into private family plots.
vigilante Self-appointed law enforcer.
transcontinenal railroad A rail link between the eastern and the western U.S.
land grant Land designated by the federal government for building schools, roads, or railroads.
open range system A way to let cattle graze where ever they want as long as the ranchers brand was on the cow proving ownership.
Homestead Act A 1862 law that gave 160 acres of land to citzens willing to live on and cultivate it for five years.
Exodusters African Americans who migrated from the south to the west after the civil war.
