1) Reconstruction A time period of 12 years after the Civil War when America needed to rebuild and reconstruct the country and let the South back into the Union
2) Freedmen's Bureau A federal agency, established by Abe Lincoln, which set up schools and hospitals for former African-American slaves and distributed clothes, food, homes, and fuel throughout the South
3) Andrew Johnson The V.P. to Abe Lincoln who took over after he was assassinated.He was a Southern Democrat (unlike Lincoln) and his approach to reconstruction was that it was the president's job, not Congress's. He was stubborn and unyielding.
4) Black Codes laws, made in the South (post-slavery), which limited the freedom of former slaves
5) Civil Rights If you were Born in the USA, you get all the citizenshp rights (including African- Americans, excluding Native Americans). A.J. vetoes these rights for African-Americans
6) The 14th Amendment It staed that everyone (including former slaves) who is citizen, receives equal protection under the law
7) Radical Reconstruction The South must accept the 13th (no slavery), 14th (equal protection under the law), and 15th (black men voting) Amendmentsin order to be re-admited into the Union- RADICAL!
8) Tenure of Office Act, 1867 President is prohibited from firing government officials WITHOUT the Senate's approval, made because of veto power (checks and balances). A.J, fired his secretary of war, Edwin Stanton over disagreemnts about Reconstruction on Febuary 1868.
9) Impeached To formally accuse the president of improper conduct while in office. A.J. was aquitted by 1 vote!
10) The 15th Amendment Any race (including African-Americans) can vote!
11) Hiarom Revels 1st black U.S. senetor, 22 African-Americans will serve in Congress following the 15th Amendment.
