Colonial Economy Terms

Termdefinition
Import To bring items of trade from a foreign country into your country.
Export To send items of trade to a foreign country from your country.
Mercantilism An economic system used in 18th century Europe where the government controls all trade between countries.
Balance of Trade the difference between the values of exports and imports of a country
Laborers Any worker
Cash Crops Something grown for the purpose of making money.
Smuggling to import or export trade items secretly, in violation of the law.
Bribery Illegally giving someone money in order to gain an advantage.
Manufactured Goods items made by humans
Customs. A government department that enforces laws on exports and imports
Indigo A plant grown in warm climates used to make blue dye
Textiles Woven or knitted cloth
Enumerated Goods Items only allowed to be sold within the British Empire
Navigation Acts laws created by Britain to control colonial trade.
