| Boris Yeltsin | leader of Russia in the late 1980's and 1990's; took over from Mikhail Gorbachev as reforms continued and Communist party control ended |
| Russia | fall of Communism, glastnost (freedom of speech) |
| Social Security | financial security in the form of regular payments to people who cannot support themselves |
| Surplus | government finally has a surplus under Clinton, after decades of trying to balance the budget |
| No child left behind act | Bush creates education act as well so more children can graduate highschool. Schools must meet criteria |
| George W. Bush | 43rd president, 2001-2009; lead efforts to unite the world against terrorism |
| Bosnia | civil war and ethnic cleansing was used to get rid of a specific group of people |
| Middle East | 2nd persian gulf war with Iraq, it was a war against terrorism that is still going on today |
| 1992 Election | three-way race, first since 1912;George Bush, Al Gore and H.Ross Perot (who was known as the washington outsider) |
| NAFTA | North American Trade agreement; called for gradual removal of trade restrictions between the three nations |
| Ethnic Cleansing | in the middle east and eastern europen leaders were using this to eliminate their competition |
| Terrorism | september 11th world trade center attacks in new york, war in Iraq |
| Apartheid | the systematic segregation of people of different racial backgrounds |
| South Africa | 1990, anti-apartheid leader, Nelson Mandella was released from jail after 27 years |
| Healthcare | Clinton proposed the creation of a government-supervised health insurance program that would guarentee affordable coverage to every American |
| Contract with America | a pledge to scale back the role of federal government, eliminate some regulation, cut taxes and balance the budget |
| Whitewater | Charges that president Clinton had engaged in improper business transactions before becoming president |
| 2000 Election | It was a tie and down to florida but florida could not decide, so the supreme court decided;Al Gore won the popular vote but George W. Bush won the elctoria votes, so he won the presidency |
