First Continental Congress Discussed the problems the Colonists were having with the British
Second Continental Congress Formed the Continental Army. Elected George Washington to lead new American army. Decided to declare independence.
Minutemen Militia groups that could be ready at a minute's notice to fight for their colony
Continental Army an army of soldiers from all 13 colonies
Olive Branch Petition Letter sent by the Second Continental Congress to King George III in an attempt to avoid war.
Common Sense A pamphlet that convinced many Americans it was time to declare independence.
The Treaty of Paris Signed in 1783 that officially ended the American Revolution. Great Britain recognized the United States as an independent country.
Mercenaries Soldiers from country paid to fight for another country. King George paid German soldiers (Hessians) to fight for Britain.
Militias Volunteer armies that are not well organized or trained.
Battle of Lexington The shot heard around the world. The beginning of the American Revolution.
Battle at Concord British soldiers wanted the weapons. Women hid the weapons in fields and barns around town. Colonists won the British marched 20 miles back to Boston.
Battle of Bunker Hill Colonel Prescott's men worked all night building a fort. It took 3 attempts before the British finally won this battle. Colonel Prescott ordered, "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes." Colonists wanted to force the British out of Boston.
Battle of Saratoga Turning point of the war. Showed the world that the Continental Army could win the war. After this battle, France agreed to join the fight against Britain.
Valley Forge Patriot army was short on food & warm clothing. Many of the soldiers did not have shoes. 2,500 men died of hunger, cold, and disease.
Yorktown Washington's army trapped the British. General Cornwallis surrendered his entire army to Washington.
Thomas Jefferson Author of the Declaration of Independence.
Thomas Paine Author of Common Sense.
George Washington Leader of the Continental Army.
Peter Salem African American soldier that shot John Pitcairn at Bunker Hill.
Paul Revere sent to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams along with other Americans that the British were coming.
