Uncle Tom's Cabin A novel about Uncle Tom, an enslaved man who was abused by Simon Legree. As a result, readers began to view slavery as more than just a political conflict.
"Bleeding Kansas" Proslavery and antislavery settlers flooded into the state of Kansas.
Dred Scott An African American slave who lost his fight for freedom plus his family's freedom too.
Stephen Douglas An American politician from Illinois. Was a U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator, and a Democratic Party nominee for President vs. Abraham Lincoln.
John Brown American who led anti-slavery revolt in Harpers Ferry, Virginia.
Fort Sumpter The site where the first shots initiated the American Civil War were fired.
Confederacy A government set up by southern slave states that declared sucession frombthe United States.
1860 Election The 19th quadrennial presidential election and served as the immediate impetus for the American Civil War outbreak.
George McClellan A major general in the Civil War and a Democratic Party candidate for the President seat. He organized the famous Army of the Potomac.
U.S. Grant The 18th President of the United States after being an important general in the last half of the Civil War. Under Grant, the Union Army beat the Confederate military.
Stonewall Jackson A Confederate general in the American Civil War and one of the best known Confederate commanders.
Border States Slave states that did not declare sucession from the United States before April 1861, including Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland and Missouri. Then after the Battle of Fort Sumpter there was Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
William T. Sherman An American soldier, businessman, educator and author. Served as a general in the American Civil War and was recognized as and outstanding commander of military strategy.
Emancipation Proclamation An order issued to all segments of the Executive branch by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War.
Robert E. Lee A career military officer who's best known for commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War.
Ironclad A steamed-propelled warship protected by iron or steal armour plates. Was developed as a result of vulnerability of wooden warships blowing up.
Jefferson Davis An American statesman and leader of the Confederacy in the Civil War, serving as the President of the Confederate States of America.
Vicksburg A series of maneuvers and battles in the Western Theater of the Civil War against Vicksburg.
Robert E. Lee A career military officer who's best known for commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War.
