TermWhat It Is
John Locke A big advocate for religious freedom, helped create the European Political Theory.
European Political Theory Ideas that the people in Europe had that we based our government on.
Montesquieu A French political thinker who came up with the seperation of powers (Today's government)
Forms Of Government Monarchy, Democracy, Republic, Oligarchy, Dictatorship, Democratic-Republic, Anarchy
Thomas Paine He is a political theorist who wrote Common Sense. The book influenced people to become a Patriot.
Monarchy (unitarian) Form of government that is ruled by a single person, the rulers are decided by family lines.
Theocracy Whoever is closest to the leader when they die is the new leader.
Oligarchy Form of government ruled by a small group of people.
Massachusetts Revolution The place where the majority of anger for the revolution was.
Boston Tea Party Dumping of Indian tea into Boston port.
Battle of Bunker Hill The battle fought on Bunker Hill, the British troupes drove the American troupes from Charlestown. It was a very heavy loss. June 17, 1775
Yorktown Battle of Yorktown on October 19, 1781 was the victory by the Patriots. It was the last battle of the Revolutionary war that convinced the British to end the war and let the Patriots win.
John Adams Was a leader of the American Revolutionary War, a delegate for the Continental Congress and fought for independence. He drafted a version of the Constitution.
Abigail Adams Wife of John Adams. She helped with the fight for independence just like John did.
Thomas Jefferson Wrote the Declaration of Independence. Served in the Continental congress, and served as a diplomate for the Treaty of Paris.
Articles of Confederation America's first attempt at a government, it was a government where states had the power, it was a failed form of government as it could not be changed to suit the people's needs.
Patriot Rebels against Europe. Wanted freedom from The King.
George Washington Was a founding father that led the Patriots to winning the war. He is also known as the father of this country.
Treaty of Paris 1783 Signed on June 3rd, 1783. It formally ended the American Revolutionary War.
Triangle Trade Trade among three ports or regions.
Metacom (King Philip's War) Was the leader of the Wamponoags near the plymouth colony. He led many natives into rebellion against the Patriots.
Roanoke First colony in the New World, nobody knows what happened, but the colony disappeared.
Democracy (Direct, republican, confederate. federal) A form of government in which citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives.
Monarchy A form of government when a single family line rules a country.
French and Indian War War mainly between British America and New France, war was from 1754 and 1764. British won and gained Montreal and all of Canada
Boston Massacre A large group of people surrounded and attacked British soliders with snowballs with clams inside of them. Five civilians were killed.
Battles of Lexington and Concord First military engagements of the American Revolution that were fought April 19. 1775
Saratoga It was a battle between the Patriots and the British. It was fought in late 1777, the Patriots won and captured 6,000 of the British. France acknowledged the United States after this battle.
Sam Adams Was an American leader/politicial/ writer. He helped support colonies rebel against Britain.
John Hancock Was a prominent patriot and he served as president of the Continental Congress.
Declaration of Independance Document that declared that the New World was no longer under British control.
Benjamin Franklin Was a founding father of the United States. Known as the first American, and is known for making the thirteen colonies a country.
Shay's Rebellion Took place in western Massachusetts. He led poor farmers to reduce debt and taxes. They were known to have nothing to lose.
Loyalist Men loyal to Europe. They were often referred to as Tories.
Valley Forge The battle fought in Pennsylvania, the army led by Washington invaded a British camp site in the winter of 1777 and 1778.
13 Original Colonies The original colonies created by the British.
Salem Witch Trail (Foundation for religious freedom) Two trials occurred, first, a hearing before the local magistrates, second, the trials were held in county court. This happened in Massachusetts, over 150 people were arrested for practicing witchcraft.
Jamestown Was a settlement in the colony of Virginia. It was the first permanent settlement in America. Founded: 1607
