What was the Bear Flag Republic? (Republic of California) People formed independence against Mexico, forming the republic.
What was the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo? Mexico agreed to the Rio Grande border for Texas and seceded New Mexico and California to the U.S.
What general marched to the Rio Grande to blockade the river? General Zach Taylor.
What was the meaning of "Fifty-Four Forty or Fight"? Slogan that referred to the latitude 54 40, the northern limit of the Oregon Territory; created support of Polk's view of the annexation of the entire Oregon Territory.
What was the result over the fight over the annexation of Texas? Polk wanted Texas and got it along with several other territories.
When was the Texas Revolution? 1835-1836
What was the reason for the Texas Revolution? Santa ana's overpriced taxing.
Who were empresarios? Land owners that granted areas of Texas who then sold it to settlers.
What was the outcome of the Battle of San Jacinto? Sam Houston defeated Santa Ana.
What was the Gadsden Purchase? A strip of land purchased from Mexico to make the current borders of the lower 48 states; wanted to make a railroad under the Rocky's.
What did the Wilmot Proviso do? Closed slavery in California and other new territories forever.
What was the Webster-Ashburton Treaty? Did not change anything other than keeping war out; Great Britain was still in Canada.
What was the Second Great Awakening? Ideas of transcendentalism and that you can go to heaven or hell; emotional meetings meant to revive religious faith (revivalism)
What happened during Commonwealth v. Hunt? The court supported the strikers, allowing several unions to sprout and grow.
What is a journeyman? Someone who has completed an apprenticeship and is fully educated in a trade or craft, but not yet a master.
What is a master? A journeyman who submitted a master work piece to a guild for evaluation and was admitted to the guild as a master.
What is an apprentice? Someone learning a trade or craft.
What was the Seneca Falls? A women's rights convention held by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott.
Who were mormons? A religious community who migrated westward along the Oregon Trail, practiced polygamy.
What did Joseph Smith do and what happened to him? Began Mormon history, established the Church of Jesus Christ. Destroyed a printing press, jailed, and murdered.
Who was Brigham Young and what did he do? Smith's successor; moved his followers beyond the boundaries of the U.S. near the Great Salt Lake.
What did the Kansas-Nebraska Act do? Divided the two areas, repealed the Missouri Compromise, and established popular sovereignty in both territories.
How did the Compromise of 1850 please the North? California would be admitted as a free state, limited slavery in Texas within its borders.
How did the Compromise of 1850 please the South? Proposed a new and more effective fugitive slave law, federal government payment helped defray Texas's expenses and debts from the war with Mexico.
Who published Uncle Tom's Cabin? Harriet Beecher Stowe.
Who led Harper's Ferry? John Brown.
What did the Emancipation Proclamation do? Freed slaves, but not immediately.
What was Clara Barton known as? "angel of the battlefield" a union nurse.
What happened at the Appomattox Courthouse and when? Lee and Grant met in Virginia village called the Appomattox Court House for a confederate surrender, on April 9th, 1865.
What was Antietam? McClellan (Union) found a note saying that Lee and Jackson's armies were separated and ordered his men after Lee. Fought on September 17th, bloodiest single day battle.
What was the Battle of Gettysburg? Most decisive, 3 day battle of the Civil War.
What did the Gettysburg Address do and who made it? United the country; Abraham Lincoln.
What amendment abolished slavery? 13th Amendment.
What did Confederate troops do at Fort Pillow? Massacred African American prisoners and some whites.
