South Carolina History Chapter 8 Review

Provincial Congress The legislative body established in 1775 by General Committee of 99 to handle South Carolina.
Mercenary A soldier who will fight for anyone willing to pay him.
Civil War A war between parties or sections of the same country.
Loyalist One who supported the British king and Parliament during the American Revolution.
Patriot One who supported the Continental and Provincial congresses during the American Revolution and who favored independence.
Skirmish Fighting between small groups.
Neutral To not take sides during a disagreement.
Stalemate A situation where there is no winner or loser; tie or deadlock.
Constitution A document that sets up the framework of a government (or any organization) will operate.
Declaration of Independence The 1776 document by which the American colonies declared their independence from Great Britain.
Siege A situation that occurs when armed forces try to capture a fortified fort or town by surrounding it and preventing any supplies from reaching it.
Confiscate To seize or take over by legal authority.
Parole Allowed to go home or to be forgiven.
Guerrilla Warfare A strategy in which small groups of soldiers harass or launch surprise attacks on the enemy and then disappear.
Edward Rutledge I was the only original delegate to the Continental Congress who was still in Philadelphia on June 7, 1776.
Avratio Gates I commanded the American troops at Saratoga, but I lost the battle at Camden.
John Burgenases I was the British commander who lost the battle of Saratoga in 1777.
Benjerman Likan I was the American commander who prevented the fall of Charles Town in 1779.
