triremes warships that had three levels of rowers on each side.
Xerxes Darius' son who led the Persians in an attack on Greece in 480BC.
Thermoplylae a narrow pass about 100 miles from Athens where the Greeks held off the Persians by tricking them there. The Persian ships were too big for the pass, so they had to go one by one. Therefore, slowing down the attack.
Salamis An island off the coast of Athens where the Athenian people fled to when the Persians were attacking.
Defensive League/Delian League A group of city-states formed to protect the Greeks from the Persians. It was headquartered in Delos.
Pericles the main leader of Athens during the Athenian empire. He made Athens a center of arts and cluture. he had a dream to make Athens the most beautiful city-state.
Parthenon The temple of the goddess Athena built on the acropolis in Greece by Pericles.
Long Walls Two fortified walls with tiled roofs. They connected Athens with its seaport Piraeus, which was five miles away. Enabled Athens to continue to get suppies during times of war.

Peloponnesian War A war led against Athens by Sparta and other city-states that resented powerful Athens. Lasted for about 30 years.
Mercenaries Hired soldiers, Athenian men who left home.
Athens A city-state located on the Aegean Coast. it had the strongest Navy.
Oligarchy a form of government in which a few people had the ruling power.
Solon Broke the political power of Athens and freed the debt-slaves. Put together the first constitution.
Constitution A set of principals and rules for governing.
Democratic Favoring the eguality for all people.
Peisistratus Gave land to the poor farmers and no longer required land ownership for ment to be citizens
Cleistenes He established the world's first democratic constitution. his reforms lasted for about 300 years.
Magistrates Judges
Council of Five Hundred Handled the daily business of Athens. Chosen by lot rather than election.
Ionia Greek city-states located in Asia Minor and the nearby Aegean Islands.
Darius A Persian king who led a cmapaign to punish the mainland Greeks for supporting ionia's revolution against persian rule. He got so mad he sent a fleet of 600 ships as a response to their attack.
Marathon The Greeks defeated the persians on this plain near Athens in 490BC.
Nike The Greek goddess of victory
