What is an amnety? group pardon
What is freedmen? enslaved people who had been freed by the war
What is a black code? new laws used by southern states to control African Americans
What is a scalawag? southern whites who opposed secession
What is a carpetbagger? name given by southerners to northern whites who went south to start businesses or pursue political office
What is impeachment? bringing of formal charges against a public official
What is a poll tax? personal tax to be paid before voting
What is a literacy test? test to see if a person can read and write
What is a grandfather clause? provision that allowed a voter to avoid a literacy test if his father or grandfather had been eligible to vote on January 1,1867
What is segragation? enforced separation of races
What is a sharecropper? laborer who works the land for the farmer who owns it in echange for a share of the value of the crop
