Questions for Texas History study Guide

What does abolition mean? putting and end to something by law
What does secession mean? When 11 southern states, including Texas left the union and formed the Confederate States of America.
What does federal rights mean? Belief that most power resides with the federal government, and that all laws passed must be obeyed by the states.
What is slavery? Is what the south viewed as a necessity to maintaining economic wealth and north viewed it as evil.
What is a tariff? A tax placed on exports or imports.
What is nationalism? Loyalty to one's country 1st, and to one's state 2nd.
What is sectionalism? Loyalty to one's state 1st, and to one's country 2nd.
What was the Battle of Palmito Ranch? Actual last battle of the civil war took place after official surrender at Appotomaxx. The confederacy won the battle, but lost the war.
What was the Battle of Fort Sumter? The battle that started the war,was in South Carolina when confederate troops attacked, when the Union garrison tried to leave the south.
What was Appotomaxx Courthouse? Where the confederacy surrendered to the union troops, which ended the Civil war (although Palmito happened afterward.)
Why did the south threaten to secede from the union? If all the newly admitted states weren't slave states.
What was fighting in Texas for? Was conceived around confederate efforts to keep Texas ports open.
What was states rights? A belief that a state could secede because each had joined the union voluntarily and the state government had greater power than national government.
Who was Robert E. Lee? A highly respected general of the confederate army
Who is Ulysses S. Grant? Union general who accepted the south's surrender at Appotomaxx Courthouse and later became president of the U.S.
Who is Jefferson Davis? He was the president of the confederacy.
Who is Sam Houston? He refused to continue serving as the governor of Texas when the states seceded to the confederacy.
What was Galveston? The busiest port in Texas, and a major link in the supply of goods; which the union lost control on January 1,1863.
What was the storehouse of the confederacy? Texas provided horses, food, AND weapons for the war effort by continuing to the statehouse.
What were Civil War Battles in Texas? Galveston Island, Sabine Pass, and Palmito Ranch were battles that occurred along Texas barriers.
What was the Battle of Sabine pass? A battle that occurred on a waterway/channel (Sabine Pass) between Louisiana and Texas where confederates sunk union ships.
