Abolitionism A movement in the antebellum period to abolish slavery. John Brown took it to heart and was a major leader in abolitionism.
Underground Railroad A system of helping fugitive slaves escape to Canada and other safe places in the antebellum period. It allowed many slaves to get to freedom and for some to tell their stories.
Paternalism Established in the late 19th century. It was a system of managing individuals in society like a father deals with a misbehaving child. Still used today for respect of elder positions in the workplace.
Fugitive Slave Act Passed as part of the Compromise of 1850. Slave holders were with legal weapons were allowed to go up North and capture escaped slaves. Helped convert indifferent northerners to antislavery.
"No Irish Need Apply" Part of an anti-sentiment of the antebellum period that discriminated against the Irish. These signs were very popular in London and U.S. newspaper help wanted ads.
Black Codes It was reliable by 1840. Any code or body of laws that limits the rights of former slaves. Protected African Americans from going back to a slave society.
Bleeding Kansas Started with the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1814. Kansas was up for grabs to be be free or slave. People from both sides came flocking in to vote, using violence to get their way. Was almost the start of the Civil War.
Bastard Workshop Established in the Antebellum period,created a formal workshop and through the artisan system out. Made workers less valuable in the work enviornment by having the work assemble only one part of the product.
Seperate Spheres Established in the antebellum period as work moved out of the home, men worked and women women stayed at home. It gives women a moral authority and men greed and ambition. Was a major impact on gender roles.
Uncle Tom's Cabin Best-Selling novel of the 19th century. Antislavery novel published to protect the Fugitive Slave Act. The novel humanized slaves with sympathetic and shocking depictions.
Trickster Tales An oral tradition of a story of deceit, magic, or violence. Popular during the antebellum period. Taught lessons in culturally appropriate behavior. The tales came from Indians and enslaved Africans.
Harriet Jacobs Best known as a fugitive slave author, wrote 'Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" and actively involved in reform movements with the civil war during the antebellum period.
Missouri Compromise Act of congress in 1820 that admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. With the Louisiana Purchase northern states besides Missouri were to be free. The compromise allowed Kansas to be free.
Seneca Falls Convention The first convention for women's rights. Took place in Seneca Falls, NY 1848. It passed several resolutions including a demand that women get the right to vote.
Manifest Destiny Doctrine of the Antebellum period. it was the U.S. destiny to expand over all of North America. It enhanced political, social, and economic influence.
John Brown During the antebellum period John Brown led a abolitionist group in Kansas. He went into homes and killed the men of the family. Was the leader of antislavery guerrillas.
Trail of Tears Route along which U.S. government forced several Indian tribes to migrate West of the Mississippi River from 1820-1840. Many suffered greatly from disease and mistreatment.
Compromise of 1850 Allowed California to come in as a free state as long as the other territories were voted on. The compromise led to the Fugitive Slave Act that didn't go over well with the North.
Election of 1860 Presidential election of four candidates during the antebellum period. Set the stage for the American Civil War. throughout the 1850's U.S. was divided on expanding slavery. The issues broke the democratic party.
Urbanization Since 1888 it has come more into play with the railroad. It is the process of migrating into cities do to industrialism. The process is still used today.
Radical Reconstruction The states that seceded to the confederacy were controlled by the federal government before being readmitted to the union. After the civil war the south was reorganized and brought back to the union.
Sharecropping During reconstruction tenenant farmers especially in the south were provided with credit for seed, tools, living quarters, and food as long as the owner gets half. It helped newly freed slaves establish themselves.
The Market Revolution In 1815 work shifted from a home-based often agricultural economy, to one based on money and buying and selling of goods. Changed our economy to what it is today.
Artisan System Before the market revolution, workers had to become apprentices, then journey men, and finally masters. Once masters they would get their own apprentice to train. It encouraged social mobility.
