| barter economy | the exchange of goods without money |
| cash crop | sold on an open market, grown for profit not for consumption |
| deference | the idea of respecting a person because of their age or class, ex: defer to your elders for advice |
| deism | the belief that god created the world but has since remained indifferent to it |
| demography | the science of vital and social statistics such as births, deaths, marriages, diseases or populations |
| duty-free | good that come into a country without taxes |
| entrepreneur | a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk |
| free market | an economic system in which prices and wages are determined by unrestricted competition between businesses. Has no government regulation or fear of monopolies |
| gentry | persons of high birth or social standing |
| guerilla warfare | oposite of gentlemanly wars, men would hide in places such as swamps before attacking. was very sneaky |
| historiography | the study of various interpretations of history |
| impressment | the act of impressing people or property into public service or use. was common when british would impress american soldiers into british navy |

| joint stock company | old fashion way of saying corporation, people who pulled resources and share the profits and risks |
| manumission | being released from slavery or servitude |

| mercenary | a soldier who fights for another country for pay |

| mestizos | mixed race people, white and native american |
| militia | soldiers |
| mulattoes | mixed race people, white and black |
| mutiny | revolt or rebellion against constituted authority, especially by sailors against their officers |
| noble savage | natives have a high-minded character and understanding of nature that makes them noble but because they are not white they are savages |
| nomads | a member of a people or tribe that has no permanent abode but moves about from place to place, usually seasonally and often following a traditional route or circuit according to the state of the pasturage or food supply |
| northwest passage | a ship route along the Arctic coast of Canada and Alaska, joining the Atlantic and Pacific oceans |
| plurality | the excess of votes received by the leading candidate, in an election in which there are three or more candidates, over those received by the next candidate ( distinguished from majority ) |

| primogeniture | 1st born son keeps all the land, caused settlements westward by the younger sons |
| protective tariff | high tariff to keep goods out of country, reduces foreign competition |

| specie | gold or silver. hard money |
| standing army | a permanently organized military force maintained by a nation |
| tariff | an official list or table showing the duties or customs imposed by a government on imports or exports |
| theocracy | a form of government in which God or a deity is recognized as the supreme civil ruler, the God's or deity's laws being interpreted by the ecclesiastical authorities. everyone thinks the king is devine |
| utopia | an ideal place or state. |
| veto | the power or right vested in one branch of a government to cancel or postpone the decisions, enactments, etc., of another branch, especially the right of a president, governor, or other chief executive to reject bills passed by the legislature. |
