What happened to Franz Ferdinand? He was assassinated by Serbian nationalist which sparked WWI.
What was the Zimmerman Note? a telegram send in 1917 by the German foreign minister to the German ambassador in Mexico.
What alliances fought in WWI? Allies and Central Powers
Which countries were involved in each? Allies-(France, Britain, Russia) Central Powers-(Germany, Austria, Hungary, Ottoman empire)
What were the causes of WWI? Nationalism, Imperialism, Militarism, and Alliance (M.A.I.N)
What was the unresticted submarine warfare? German U-boats
How did the U.S. defend against it? It sunk ships thought to be carrying weapons or supplies to the Allies.
What was the Selective Service Act? law required men to register for military services.
What was the results of the Selective Service Act? 24 million men had registered and almost 3 million were called up.
What new weapons were introduced during WWI? Poison gas, tanks, airplanes,and machine guns
How did the new weapons change the face of warfare? led to horrific injuries and hazards.
How did American women benefit from the war? Women took jobs in heavy industry previously held by men. They were active in peace movement and the 19th amendment passes. Also gave the right to vote.
What was the Great Migration? Large-scale movement of southern blacks to the north.
Why did the Great Migration take place? They wanted to escape racial discrimination and take up new job opprotunities.
What was the function of the War Industries Board? Urges mass production, standardizing products, sets production quotas, and allocated raw materials.
What were the Espionage and Sedition Acts? two laws that imposed harsh penalties on anyone interfering with war effort and speaking aginst government
What were the Fourteen Points? Wilson's plan for world peace.
Why was the Fourteen Points rejected? Leaders felt Germany should pay for war and wanted vengance, not peace.
What was the purpose of the League of Nations? Established to promote international peace.
Why did the members of the U.S. government oppose of the League of Nations? It threatened U.S. policy of isolationism.
Who were the "Big Four"? Wilson(U.S.), Clemenceau(French), Lloyd George (British), and Orlando(Italian)
What settlements were outlined in the Treaty of Versailles? Established a new nation and shifted boundaries.
Why can the treaty be considered a failure? Led to war because it didnt treat all nations in a fair manner
In what ways was WWI different from earlier wars in which the U.S. had been involved? The war involved more deadly weapons such as submarines, machine guns, poison gas, tanks, and airplanes. It was global, involving many more nations than had ever been in war before. European civilians died in greater number in greater numbers and in
greater proportionsthan has been in other wars. The U.S. solider hd to travel to Europe to fight.
How did the U.S. government expand its powers during WWI? What were the benefits and drawbacks of these actions? Government agencies such as War Industries Board, the railroad administration, and Fuel administration controlled war time production, distribtion workers refused to obey board decisions could lose their draft exemptions. The Espionage and Sedition Acts
allowed a citizen to be fined or imprisioned for speaking out against the government of war effort. Benefits of these action included streamlining war production and removing war obstacles to war effort drawbacks.
What lasting effects did the war have for African Americans and women? Discuss what changes occured and why they occured. The war contributed to the Great Migration. Cause of the migration included racism in the south, poor farming conditions, and new job opprotunities in war industries in Northern cities. During the war, women took jobs traditionaly held by men.
More women also entered its workforce the need for greater production during wartie and the fact en were in the military created more jobs for women. Womens service during the war believed support for women suffrage movement and Congress finally passed
the 19th amendment.
