Progressive Movement

What is Women's Suffrage?It is women's right to vote.
What is Prohibition? It is the act of prohibiting alcohol.
Define the Pure Food & Drug Act. It outlawed food and drugs containing harmful ingredients.
Define the Meat Inspection Act. It required federal government inspections of meat shipping across state lines and made meat processing plants cleaner.
Explain the purpose of the muckrakers. They were the progressive writers who exposed abuse and corruptions in the workplace.
What was the Progressive Era? A period of social activism and social reform.
When was the Progressive Era? From the 1890's to the 1920's.
What president is know as the "Trust Buster"? Theodore Roosevelt.
What was the Keating-Owens Act of 1916? It forbid 'interstate' transportation of products made in factories employing children under 14.
What is the Sherman Anti-Trust Act? It prevents any business structures that restrains trade.
What is the Clayton Anti-Trust Act? It Expanded Sherman by outlawing price fixing.
Explain John Dewey's philosophy towards education. He stated that education is fundamental to social progress.
What is one components of the Tenement Act? Minimum standards for housing codes.
What is another component of the Tenement Act? Expanding public health.
How did Muller v. Oregon respond in support of the Progressive Era? They responded with limited working hours and minimum wages.
What did the 17th Amendment allow during the Progressive Era? It gave direct election of senators.
What did the 18th Amendment allow during the Progressive Era? It allowed social reform.
What did the 19th Amendment allow during the Progressive Era? It allowed women to vote.
What allowed voters to vote privately? A secret ballot.
What does a recall allow? It allows citizens to remove an elected official from office.
What is Direct Primary? Voters select a party's candidate for public office.
What does Referendum allow? It allows citizens to vote on proposed or existing laws.
What does an initiative allow? It allows citizens to propose new laws.
What was another component of the Tenement Act? To provide at least on toilet for every two families.
Who What is one goal of the Progressive Movement? To promote social welfare.
What is another goal of the progressive movement? To increase government efficiency.
