When was the Progressive era? The Progressive era was when America entered the 20th century.
What helped many people but also created dangerous working environments and unhealthy living conditions for the urban poor? Industrialization
What are some problems of the 1890's? -Huge gap between the rich and poor -Tremendous econimic and political power of the rich - Wealthy were insensitively flaunting their wealth infront of poor people -Industrial workers hideously poor, living in filh & working in dangerus conditions
Who wrote How The Other Half Lives? Jacob Riis
Muckrakers exposed what? They exposed the socail, political, and economical shortflls of industrialization in hops to "clean" up society.
Who are some influential muckrakers? -Jacob Riis -Lewis Hines -Ida Tarbll -Lincoln Steffens -Upton Sinclair
What did Jacob Riis do as a muckraker? He exposed slums through magazines and pictures.
What did Lewis Hines do as a muckraker? He exposed the horrors of child labor with pictures.
What did Ida Tarball do as a muchraker? He exposed monopoly cut throat tactics to acuire power (Standard Oil Company) and frightened the middle class of their power.
What did Lincoln Steffens do as a muckraker? He exposed the currupt government in the cities.
What did Upton Sinclair do as a muchraker? His gol was to expose the unsanitary conditions of meatpacking plants.
What is the Square Deal? It allowed fair and equal treatment for all.
Who spent a lot of attention on regulating corporations? Theodore Roosevelt
what did the Square Deal promise? It promised to, "see that each is given a square deal, because he is entitled to no more and should recevive no less."
Trusts controlled how much of the U.S industries? 80 percent
What did Roosevelt do to spilt up monopolies and to limit power? He filed 44 anotitrust suits.
What are the 4 goals of reformers? 1) Potect socail welfare 2)Promote moral improvement 3)Create econimic reform 4)Political corruption
What is a direct primary? When voters select a party's candidate for public office.
What is a secret ballot? When people vote privately without fear of coercion.
What is an initiative? It allows citizens to propose new laws.
What is the rederendum? It allows citisens to vote on a proposed or existing law.
What is recall? It allows voters to remove an lected official for of office.
What are the 4 amendments added to the constitution durng the progressive era and explain them? -16th~ federal income tax -17th~ direct election of senators -18th~ prohibition -19th~ vote for women
What did the Sherman Anti-Trust do? It prevents and business structures that restrains trade.
What does the Clayton Anti-Trust do? It expanded Sherman by outlawing price fixing.
