what is the progressive movement? it was a period of u.s. history that ran roughly from the 1890's to the 1920's
what was one of the problems of the 1890's? HUGE gap between rich and poor
what were the four goals of reformers? 1.protect social welfare 2.promote moral improvement 3.create economic reform 4. political corruption
what are muckrackers? dug up the "muck" in society and made the people aware to it to spark change.
what are some influential muckrackers? Jacob Riis, Lewis Hines, Ida Tarbell, Lincoln Steffens, and Upton Sinclair
Political reforms. back to the basics=democracy=government for the people by the people tried to put more power into the hands of the people. innovative changes in city government.(city managers and commission model)(get rid of political machines...city bosses). more fair elections->make politicians accountable to the people
what are the 6 political reforms? direct primary 17th amendment secret ballot initiative referendum recall
who was the trust buster? Theodore Roosevelt
what is the square deal? fair and equal treatment for all
what was the trust busting campaign? targeted bad trusts that sold inferior products, competed unfairly, or corrupted public officials.
what is the sherman anti trust act? prevents any business structures that restrains trade
what is the clayton anti trust act? expanded sherman by outlawing price fixing
