| Standing Committee | permanent congressional committee assigned to study a specific issue |
| Cabinet | group of officials that advise the President |
| federal | having to do with the national government |
| veto | to reject |
| general welfare | well-being of the people |
| precedent | act or decision that sets an example for others to follow |
| override | to overrule or set aside |
| executive agreement | agreement made by the President with another head of state |
| popular sovereignty | people hold the final authority in government |
| constituent | person who elected a representative to office |
| liberty | freedom to live as you please |
| dissenting opinion | statement explaining why a Supreme Court Justicie disagrees with the opinion of the majority |
| domestic tranquility | peace at home |
| impeach | to bring formal charge of wrongdoing against the President or another public official |
| appeal | ask that a decision be reviewed by a higher court |
| opinion | a judge's official statement of the legal reasons for her decision |
| Representative Government | government in which voters elect representatives to make laws for them |
| amendment | formal, written change |
| appropriate | to set aside money for a special purpose |
| Judicial Review | Supreme Court decides whether acts of the President or laws passed by Congress are constitutional |
| bill | proposed law |
| due process | officials must follow the same fair rules in all cases brought to trial |
| unconstitutional | not permitted by the constitution |
| Joint Committee | committee that contains members of both the House and the Senate |
