Enlightenment A movement of intellectuals from Europe and the Americas based on the ideas of natural law. Influenced founding fathers, especially Franklin and Jefferson.
Republicanism A government based on the consent of the people. A form of government where we choose representatives. It is the basis of our current government
Magna Carta A legal document that King John was forced to sign by his nobles that reduced his power and gave more to the lords. Right to trial by jury. The first document limiting royal power. Signed in 1215.
Legislature An assembly that passes and approves laws. Congress is the legislature of the U.S.
Federalists The people supporting the ratification of the Constitution and a strong central government.
Anti-federalists The people against ratifying the Constitution. Wanted stronger state governments.
Alexander Hamilton Founding father and federalist. Wrote essays supporting the ratification of the constitution
James Madison Presented the Virginia plan at the Constitutional Convention. Founding father. He was the fourth president of the United States. He wanted to abolish the articles.
